❦ BACKGROUND
Basic overview Marcello Alvarez was born in raised in Costa Real, California. He wasn't an only child for long, a year after he was born his sister came along. Soon after his sister's birth his father left the family, leaving his mother to raise them both alone. They moved from their modest home to an apartment and have been struggling to make ends meet ever since.
As soon as he was legally able he's been trying to find work to support his mother and help with the bills, however she continuously refuses his help and insists he quit any jobs he has in order to concentrate on his studies.

He met Nike his final year of high school, being her drum major in band. While his sister always talked about this girl, he didn't really become all that close with her. He was in his final year of high school, college apps and moving out all over his head he didn't have much time for any of his sisters crazy schemes to get him a girlfriend.
However, once his sister was murdered during the spring semester, everything changed. He knew Nike had been implicated as possibly being legally responsible for Veronica's death, but he didn't believe that.
She saved his life one more time before disappearing completely for three years.
He spent those three years trying to forget what had happened, and trying to put his broken family back together. He took an study abroad opportunity to Japan, something he had always wanted to do, during his third year. It's here that he meets Yoshie and Shinji and runs into Nike. After a strained reunion, he does his best to force himself back into her life, eventually becoming close to her. Closer than he had ever been before Veronica's death.
Then. She disappears again. Saving his life again.
A few weeks later she contacts him, anonymously. And they meet up. He makes her promise to keep in touch, even though she's moving out of his spectrum again.
She promises and then leaves him. He returns to school, though, he's assured she'll at least try to maintain contact with him.
Three defining moments from canon - First finding out about Nike's powers. He quickly learned he should act like a knight in shining armour, that she could handle herself.
- His sister's death. It changed his life and his relationships with everyone around him. He's distanced himself from people in general, but has grown closer to those who were already close.
- Seeing Nike again after three years. He realized he wanted to take care of her and try to stay in her life.
Character's Financial/Social Situation: His mother is raising he and his sister by herself. Though his mother doesn't want him working and attending school at the same time he finds ways around it, picking up side jobs. He's received several large scholarships for his academics.
Educational Background: Marcello is extremely intelligent and is attending Stanford premed.
Family & Relationships:
Mother He was always close with his mother no matter how much she nags him. However after the death of his sister, things have changed. His mother is still in mourning and he feels like he can't connect with her in the same way he used to.
Veronica His sister, his confidante. They were super close ever since childhood. While they had their rough patches they had always been very open with each other. She was one of his best friends and the glue which kept his small family together. However after his sister's death his mother fell apart, and while she still functioned normally by all means she seemed to always be missing that spark of life, the thing which his sister added to his family.
He respects and honors his sister's memory, however has come to resent it a bit as it has become such a dark spot in his life. He wishes that perhaps the depression surrounding Veronica's name could someday be lifted so his mother could live again.
Father Was never in his life. He doesn't care much for him.
Nike This girl is strangely enough one of the closest things he has to a best friend right now. After his sister's death he struggled to find and keep friends, not really wanting to get close to anyone in particular. However, once Nike came back into his life he clung to her emotionally. She's his last connection to Veronica in his mind, especially considering she took on so many of his sister's traits.
She doesn't mind the fact that he see's her this way at all and similarly clings back to him
Shinji Shinji and Marcello get along well enough. They really weren't all that interested in becoming close until they realized they shared Nike in common. Marcello is unsure of how much to let Shinji in on Nike's past and the events which led up to who she is today. However he does trust Nike in Shinji's hands and think he is a very capable guardian for Nike.
Yoshie He doesn't know Yoshie all that well. However, he is grateful towards her. She is the one who brought Nike back into his life, indirect as it was. He thinks she's super sweet and in many ways reminds him of his own sister.
Character's Spiritual/Religious Beliefs: Christian. Only loosely.

Greatest flaw: He tends to expect people to level with him. He isn't necessarily selfish, he just has so many things on his mind he doesn't think of others as much as he should. This can also make him ignorant of other people's feelings.

Personality:Marcello is an incredibly intelligent young man. He is extremely charming and gets along with nearly everyone he meets. He'd much rather be a peacemaker than stir up trouble. However under all this he feels incredibly isolated from people. Veronica, his sister, was a person whom helped keep him grounded to earth when they were growing up. TO have her ripped away was something which flipped his world upside down. It's not that he dislikes people, he just simply lets them wash over him. Deep inside he would admit to himself that he is selfish, he wishes everything was on his playing field, his terms.
